'Much' and 'many' are two words that a lot of English speakers mix up and get confused about regularly. 'Much' is used when we are speaking about a singular noun. 'How much' और 'how many' के बीच का मुख्य अंतर 'countable' और 'uncountable' nouns के बीच के अंतर पर निहित है। तो आइए पहले जानें कि इन दो शब्दों का क्या मतलब है।

‍Countable Nouns
Countable nouns को हम हिंदी में गणनीय संज्ञाएँ बोलते हैं। यह वह संज्ञाएँ हैं जिन्हे हम गिन सके। उदाहरण के लिए:

I have three books to read.
मेरे पास पढ़ने के लिए तीन पुस्तकें हैं।

I eat an apple everyday. 
मैं प्रतिदिन एक सेब खाता हूँ।

‍Uncountable Nouns
Uncountable nouns यानि की अगणनीय संज्ञाएँ वे होती हैं जिन्हें हम गिन नहीं सकते हैं। जैसे की:

Can I please have some water?
क्या मुझे थोड़ा पानी मिल सकता है?

I need information before starting this project. 
यह प्रोजेक्ट शुरू करने से पहले मुझे कुछ जानकारी चाहिए।

‍How many
हम मात्रा के बारे में पूछताछ करने के लिए ‘how many’ का उपयोग करते हैं जब विचाराधीन संज्ञाएँ गणनीय यानि की countable होती हैं। यहाँ आपके लिए कुछ उदाहरण दिए गए हैं:

How many books have you read?
आपने कितनी किताबें पढ़ी हैं?

How many students are there in this class?
इस कक्षा में कितने छात्र हैं?

How many bags do you own?
आपके पास कितने बैग हैं?

यहाँ हम किताब, छात्र और बैग की संख्या आसानी से गिन सकते हैं और मात्रा निर्दिष्ट करते हुए सटीक उत्तर दे सकते हैं। 'Many' का मतलब बहुत होता है लेकिन अगर आपने बहुत सारी किताबें नहीं पढ़ी हैं तो आप सटीक संख्या का उत्तर दे सकते हैं। 
अब ऐसी परिस्थितियाँ भी हो सकती हैं जहाँ आप कन्फ्यूज़ हो। जैसे की जब आप बहुत सारी गाड़ियों को देखते हैं जिन्हें आप ट्रैफिक जाम में नहीं गिन सकते वहाँ आप 'too many' का इस्तेमाल कर सकते हैं।

‍How much
‘How much’ एक ऐसा वाक्यांश है जिसका प्रयोग अगणनीय संज्ञाओं यानि की uncountable nouns के साथ किया जाता है। यहाँ आपके लिए कुछ उदाहरण दिए गए हैं:

How much milk do we need? 
हमें कितने दूध की ज़रूरत है?

How much money do you have?
तुम्हारे पास कितना पैसा है?

How much time did you spend at the mall today? 
आज तुमने मॉल में कितना समय बिताया?

आप कह सकते हैं कि पैसे गिनना संभव है लेकिन फिर यह याद रखना महत्वपूर्ण है कि हम पैसों को नहीं बल्कि नोटों को ही गिनते हैं।

‍उपयोग कैसे याद रखें? 
याद रखने के कुछ तरकीबें:

‘How much’ उन संज्ञाओं के लिए उपयोग किया जाता है जिनमें  बहुवचन नहीं होते, जैसे: money, water, आदि । ‘How many’ का उपयोग बहुवचन संज्ञाओं जैसे books, students, और apples के लिए किया जाता है।
